On Being A Historian Songtext
well, i've written many volumes
and i've talked to all the witnesses i can
you know that every written history
is only an attempt to understand
so i've taken to recording what i see
i write it down where it might last
all the pages filling up with dust and words
for further study of the past

and when you need to know the facts
that's what i'm here for
so have a seat and open up the book
this is why i wrote it down

and you can ask me how the weather was
the day the revolution broke
and you can ask me to repeat to you
all the words our fathers spoke
and the names of all the soldiers you forgot,
how you loved them very much
and the wounded one who wanted nothing more
than to feel his mother's touch

and when you need to know the facts
that's what i'm here for
so have a seat and open up the book
this is why i wrote it down

and you know that this is where it was
and this is how it's been since then
so why do we study history
if we're doomed to make the same mistaked again?
this reconstruction that you want
don't you know that it won't stand?
because any building broken by the war
can never be the same again

and when you need to know the facts
that's what i'm here for
so have a seat and open up the book
this is why i wrote it down
